Grammar classes have been around for a long time. The study of grammar dates back at least to around 100 B.C. with Dionysius Thrax writing the first known grammar book. These early grammatical studies were quite philosophical in nature, discussing why a tree is called a tree and so on. But they also delved into the relationship of words to one another and individual word usage.
